My Story

My story isn't as dramatic as most of the others, but has affected me to the point that I never want to go to another church again.

I grew up Catholic. I met this boy at 16 who was Pentecostal. His family was very religious. They were the most critical and demeaning people I've ever met, he was worse. After high school I suffered major anxiety and panic attacks and was told that God could heal me. I went to an AOG church. No music other than Christian, no secular books, no dating, no TV, no movies (other than Christian). It was a very controlling atmosphere. From there I had gone to several different denominations & non-denominational churches. The non-denominational churches were controlling, very money hungry and excessively judgmental. I met my now-husband at an AOG church and fell in love. Same story. Went to another non-D church who separated my husband from his family because they weren't a good influence and told us not to see each other because we were getting intimate. We left that church for good. Moved to Sarasota, went to another non-D church, they were very friendly people, but every other sermon was about tithing, seed faith, prosperity teaching. It was the typical Word of Faith church. They put pressure on talking in tongues, it just didn't happen. We left several times & came back, but the last time was 2 yrs ago. I still love the people, the pastor and his wife, but realize that it's not biblical. We can't find a church now. We are staying away from those types and am leaning more toward the modern Mennonite churches.
